It’s Been a Good Run. Thank You!

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 11:07 pm

Friends, I so appreciate that you’ve visited my blog during the past two years. What started as a school assignment turned into something that brought me a lot of joy. Your comments and perspectives are what made it interesting to me, and they’re what sparked some great conversations.

These days, I’m focused on finishing my thesis, and some other very exciting things. Perhaps the Accidental Luddite will be back at some point in the future. For now, though, I’m going to put her to bed. She will have wonderful dreams of our online adventure together.

Take care, and thank you!

The Curious Case of the Accidental Luddite

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 2:20 pm

If there is one thing I’ve learned through dating, it’s that people never cease to surprise me. Actually, that’s not exclusive of dating. I love the little and big things that make people unique and kind of quirky. Here are some things that put me into either of those categories:

  • I have never had a cup of coffee.
  • I like to read magazines back-to-front, especially Vanity Fair and People.
  • I love the smell of skunk. I have yet to meet anyone who feels similarly. Not to sound counter-culture or anything, but I take secret pleasure in this.
  • I have two dimples on my right cheek, and none on the left. I’m lopsided, but in a v. cheerful way!
  • I once stole a My Little Pony and a bar of soap that looked like a cupcake. It tasted terrible (the soap, not the My Little Pony), and I’m now the most ethical person you’ll ever meet.

How about you?

A Thursday Miracle

How do I express the joy I felt today, courtesy of…Facebook?

Eight years ago, someone came in to my life who inspired me to appreciate everything, live fully, help others and take a stand against the intolerant. I was just a couple of decades old, and this wonderful man made a tremendous impression on me. Then he was gone and, despite my best efforts, I had no way to find him.

Fast-forward through six years of wondering, a Facebook search and a shot in the dark. I found my friend this morning.

Some of you laugh because, while I fully embrace technology for professional purposes, I’m slower to adopt it for personal use. Case in point: I abhor text-messaging. In this fast-paced, ever-connected world, I fear we’re losing our ability to connect and communicate on a human level. A 180-word, abbreviated message can’t convey emotion, but it can cause a lot of trouble. I’d rather talk with you in person, or on the phone, or (last choice here) over e-mail.

But look at what technology has done for me lately. I am amazed by its ability to reunite, comfort, educate and entertain. I guess I’m finding a happy medium between the real world and the virtual world and, in the process, I’m finding the people I care about.

Has technology helped you reconnect? Are you for certain mediums, or against others?

Yes, We Can!

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 2:17 am

There are certain events in history that touch us so deeply, it is impossible to forget them. Like many of you, I will remember Election Day 2008 forever.

This wasn’t just another race for Obama campaign volunteers. After all, he wasn’t just another candidate. Instead, he was the man we believed in. The man who inspired us to be hopeful, not hateful. The man who had us knocking on doors, chatting up neighbors and making contributions for the first time.

I spent Election Day in Hawaii, where I vacationed with some of my family. Since Hawaii is five hours behind EDT, we found ourselves behind the news cycle – and at odds with one another. We’ve never agreed on politics, so we forged a separate peace by agreeing not to talk about the election for the rest of the day.

When we left for dinner, which was aboard a ship amongst my dad’s co-workers, we knew Obama had a comfortable lead over McCain, but we also knew there were plenty of electoral votes left for either man. As we boarded the boat and saw folks on CNN with their arms in the air, I panicked: for whom were they cheering?

If, like me, you invested a little piece of your heart in this election, you too may have felt flooded with emotion when the words “Obama Elected President” subsequently flashed across the screen. Determined not to make my family feel bad, I instead found a quiet corner and called some of my fellow volunteers. And then I settled in to my seat to watch the candidates’ speeches. When President-Elect Obama took to the stage, I couldn’t hold the tears back any longer. The other passengers may have thought I was the saddest girl on the sea that day. In reality, I was the happiest.

Some have said this election made them feel proud of America again. Truth be told, that really bothers me, because I’ve always had pride in my country, and I always will. And the fact that so many people from so many walks of life came together to elect this man continues to overwhelm me.

Over the past week, I’ve thought a lot about the challenges and opportunities we face. About these lines from Obama’s acceptance speech at Grant Park:

I know you didn’t do this just to win an election. And I know you didn’t do it for me. You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime — two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century…In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let’s resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long…And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn, I may not have won your vote tonight, but I hear your voices. I need your help. And I will be your president, too.

Naturally, this makes me reflect on the enormous expectations placed on our new leader, and I wonder, can we accomplish these things? Can we heal our nation’s wounds?

My simple answer is, Yes, We Can!

What are your Election Night stories? What do you hope President-Elect Obama will accomplish?

Not A Good Idea

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 10:39 pm

Oh Mylanta, why did I think it would be interesting to watch a show about the paranormal? I am sufficiently freaked. Lights on. Lights on!

I think I need a Charlie Brown special or similar, stat. And Rosie.

How are you celebrating Halloween this year?

Do You Have a Gas Problem?, Part Two

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 8:30 pm

With elections right around the corner, energy depedence is a hot topic. Given that gas prices have spiked ten cents per night in my neighborhood since the hurricanes in the Gulf, I don’t want to hear one more word about reducing our need for foreign oil. Clearly, domestic drilling comes with its own issues, and we need to talk seriously about reducing our dependence on oil, period.

What issues are on your minds heading in to November?

Hail to the Redskins!

Oh, I hope you saw today’s Skins game. Gosh, I love the fall! Troy and I trekked to FedEx Field for some all-American good times, and the guys in maroon and gold did not disappoint. And can I just say, if you’re going to go to a football game, sit in a suite on the 50-yard line.

Now if I can just figure out how the cheerleaders keep their hair in place, what with all the moving and shaking. I’m guessing product, but that’s probably a trade secret. Also, I like their little outfits. If you’ve got it, flaunt it.

How did you spend your weekend?

She’s Got the Pipes to Pay the Bills

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 10:25 pm

I just know you woke up this morning thinking, “I STILL have not heard about Monday’s Celine Dion Concert, and I cannot wait even one day more for a recap!” (If you didn’t, you should have.) Well, many apologies for the delay. It was just so good that I’ve needed a week to collect my thoughts.

As mentioned previously, I think Celine is the cat’s pajamas. I realize this makes me nothing less than a total nerd. However, I wasn’t going to let that stop me from joining Michelle for this show, especially since I’ve been thwarted before.

So we started our evening properly at Zola, then headed to the Verizon Center. And as we made our way through the clouds to our 400-level seats (next time, we have GOT to spring for the floor), our fellow nerds were in full effect. Their excitement was palpable. Who could blame them?

The opening act was excellent, but let’s not mince words: the people were there for Celine. As the lights went down, Michelle and I squealed with delight. Our tiny French-Canadian friend didn’t let us down for the next two hours. She sang everything we love, plus songs we’d never heard before. She also brought a little bit of Vegas with her: between the staging, costuming and choreography, sister puts on a show.

(I can identify with a woman who runs around in three-inch heels. That’s a typical day in my apartment while I listen to my iPod!)

Given that not everyone is a fan, I will spare you the details. Suffice it to say we had a wonderful time, and we have the pictures (dare I say…video?) to prove it. So if you want more, we’ll dish.

What concerts did you see this summer?

Two very happy girls...
