How do I express the joy I felt today, courtesy of…Facebook?
Eight years ago, someone came in to my life who inspired me to appreciate everything, live fully, help others and take a stand against the intolerant. I was just a couple of decades old, and this wonderful man made a tremendous impression on me. Then he was gone and, despite my best efforts, I had no way to find him.
Fast-forward through six years of wondering, a Facebook search and a shot in the dark. I found my friend this morning.
Some of you laugh because, while I fully embrace technology for professional purposes, I’m slower to adopt it for personal use. Case in point: I abhor text-messaging. In this fast-paced, ever-connected world, I fear we’re losing our ability to connect and communicate on a human level. A 180-word, abbreviated message can’t convey emotion, but it can cause a lot of trouble. I’d rather talk with you in person, or on the phone, or (last choice here) over e-mail.
But look at what technology has done for me lately. I am amazed by its ability to reunite, comfort, educate and entertain. I guess I’m finding a happy medium between the real world and the virtual world and, in the process, I’m finding the people I care about.
Has technology helped you reconnect? Are you for certain mediums, or against others?
