I Blame Andrea and Alice

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 8:13 am

Friends, I’m hooked on Project Runway. For those of you who haven’t seen it, 15 would-be fashion designers compete to hold their own show during Fashion Week in New York. The winner also gets a spread in Elle, $100,000 and some less interesting things.

I blame Andrea and Alice for my new addiction as they told me about the show.

Amidst a sea of reality TV programs, why do I like this one so (sew!) much? In no particular order:

  • Tim Gunn;
  • the fashion;
  • the inevitable tension as each week’s deadline draws near (I would know nothing about deadlines); and
  • the incredible product placement and branding.

So what about you — have you seen it? Are you hooked? And if not on this, what?

The End of an Era

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 1:12 am

It’s with a sad, sad heart that I tell you I sold Homer, my first car and one of the most dependable men in my life. Homer was with me through all of the following and more:

  • every first date (late bloomer!), break-up and job interview I’ve ever had;
  • weather to include snowstorms, hailstorms, rainy nights and sunny days;
  • various musical interests, like boy bands, country music, hip-hop and even opera;
  • weddings, funerals (including one for the wrong person, which I attended last year. Actually a funny story in hindsight!) and other life events; and
  • the carrying home of children, groceries, puppies and parents.

In case you are wondering, I did cry as we handed over the keys to the dealership. I believe there are photos, which I may post at some point.

But now, I am excited to introduce Norman Carlos (get it, CARlos?), my new ride. He is silver and schnazzy. Can’t seem to find the photos from the day I got him, but here is one Andrea took on my birthday. (Notice the corsage — is Andrea the cutest, or what?)

Norman Carlos

And if you are very nice to me, I will take you for a ride, turn on the seat warmers and let you play DJ.

What’s new (or gently used) in your life?

I Heart Hockey

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 12:17 pm

We had a great time at last night’s Capitals game and, while I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: I LOVE hockey. Why?

  • adorable Eastern European men;
  • seats so close that, if we were any closer, we’d be in skates;
  • consistently random crowds of twenty- and thirty-somethings, families and Barney Gumbles; and
  • dinner, drinks and good times in Chinatown.

Interestingly, my mom used to play ice hockey and was pretty good (again, Eastern European); she was also model-gorgeous. I love that she could be smart, sporty and pretty at the same time. The hockey thing always surprises people, though.

What did you do in your younger years that would come as a shock to those who know you now?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 1:11 pm

Hope your day is off to a great start, and that there is much eating, napping, football and movie watching on your to-do list.  Any cool Thanksgiving traditions?

Off to help the Polish Tornado in the kitchen. But before I go, know that, when I count what I’m thankful for this year, I include you.

A Cool Cat

Did anyone see James Taylor and his drum machine on the TODAY Show yesterday? He’s such a cool cat, even after all these years.

Thanks!

Thanks to everyone who came out Friday for some birthday good times. As I prepare to turn another year older I am, as always, so grateful for my family and friends.

My Secret Shame

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 12:21 am

I like to think of myself as a well-rounded and cultured person. From travel to books to music, I like to try new things. But I am semi-ashamed to share with you that (brace yourselves) I love Celine Dion. I know, she’s not hip, but those melodies! That voice!

Well, I missed Celine when I was in Las Vegas. I mean, it seemed like such an obvious choice to me: gambling, or CELINE? But the friends I was with saw things differently.

So imagine my delight to hear this morning that Celine is coming to Washington. A new day has come, so to speak! The only catch: she won’t be here for another 10 months. But whatever, she’s coming!

And now I wonder…who else wants to go? If you’re too embarassed to admit to this publicly, you can call me. Because I feel your shame (and by shame, I mean joy).

…Update: I love Phil Collins, too. Wonder when he’s coming to Washington?

Happy Birthday, Dad!

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 8:49 pm

Happy Birthday to my dad! Though he is feeling a bit old, we still think he is fun and boyish. Papa: Midgie, the Boy Child, Rosie, Daisy (ESPECIALLY Daisy), Maddy and I want you to know that you’re one of our favorite people.

Interestingly, my dad happens to be a veteran born on Veterans Day. To him and to all who have done so much for our nation, thank you.

…Update: Lisa, Indy and Cooper say Happy Birthday, too!

That’s Strange…

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 9:25 am

I had the weirdest dream last night that Kanye West and I sat next to each other at the dinner party I really am going to tonight. Kanye and I had the best conversation, and I kept saying, “Kanye, I don’t understand why everyone gives you such a hard time. You’re so NICE!” And he kept saying, “I know. I don’t get it, either.” And then we decided to be friends.

What is the weirdest dream you’ve had lately?

…Update: Kanye West was not at the dinner party I attended last night. In case you wondered.

I Won the Battle, But Not the War…

Steve Jobs, newsflash: my iPod is working again. Apparently, this is no thanks to you.

Jeff-O went with me to the Apple store last night because he is good at asking for what he wants, and I am not. We strategized in the parking lot. What did we want? A functioning iPod. When did we want it? Now!

So we approached the “Genius Bar,” and we braced ourselves for a standoffish, surly young whippersnapper who would give us a hard time. Instead, we got a super-nice guy who, in two shakes, got the thing working again.

And what was wrong with it? The Apple docking station that I hooked to my Bose radio nearly fried the battery. This is apparently a very common problem. And what would Apple have done if its Apple docking station fried my Apple iPod? Sold me a used iPod, or given me a discount on a new iPod.

There lies what I hate about Apple: the company’s product damages my original purchase, and the solution is that I have to buy a new product. Keep in mind that I also have an iPod Shuffle that has never worked, but can’t be returned. I’ve worked retail, and I know good customer service policies when I see them. I’ve never seen a good one at Apple.

So what do you think — is Apple in the wrong? Have you had a good experience with the company?
