Happy Birthday, Rose and Daisy!

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 12:00 am

(It took me so long to choose the right photos of the Rose and Daisy that I did, in fact, miss their birthday, which is June 25. But only by five seconds or so.  Please don’t tell them; they can’t read time.)

I cannot let the day go by without wishing Rose and Daisy the happiest of birthdays! Today, they are four.

Here are some recent pictures of the ladies. First, Daisy and her dad on their Gator:

And who can resist Rosie with the big smile?

I love you, you party animals!

Eww…

(The following entry deals in the currency of potty humor and, while I am sorry, I could not resist. Don’t judge.)

Have you heard of the new diet pill, Alli? Combined with diet and exercise, it helps people lose 1.5 times more weight by blocking fat absorbtion. Sounds good, right?

Not so fast, friends. If you cheat on this diet, you pay. Read this excerpt from a recent Boston Globe article:

“Eat too much fat…and the drug’s dreadful side effects can kick in: oily gas and…sudden, uncontrolled bowel movements. Glaxo suggests that new Alli users wear dark apparel and have a change of clothes ready.”

Oily gas? Wear dark apparel and have a change of clothes ready?! And what will you say when you need that change of clothes? ”Oops, I pooped!”

The need for spare pants is not cool. Just see what’s ended up on YouTube. This pill is pronounced “ally,” but it’s no friend.

And yet, people are crazy for the Alli. According to an article in the Houston Chronicle, it is flying off the shelves. People are even buying adult diapers and forming “accident support groups.”

What is the most outlandish thing you’ve tried in order to change your appearance?

A Big Thank You

I just wanted to thank everyone for your kind words about my grandfather (and your grandfathers. I have loved reading your stories.). Between phone calls and e-mails and blog posts and cards, you have made my family feel very loved. We appreciate you.

A Difficult Year…

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 10:09 pm

Hi friends. I try to keep things light and fun around here, but today was heavy and no fun at all.

My grandfather passed away this morning after a prolonged illness. Although we are grateful that his suffering is over, and that he’s with loved ones who have gone before him, this is painful nonetheless. Our sadness is intensifed by the loss of my cousin earlier this year, and the fact that this particular side of my family lives abroad. My heart breaks for my mom each time she is left out of the little and big rituals that help a person grieve. Fortunately, she will be able to travel home in time for her father’s funeral.

One reason I write about this is to ask for your thoughts if my family happens to come to mind. It’s been a difficult year in a few ways. You understand.

Another reason I write is to share my favorite story about my grandfather. When I was younger, my mom and I spent summers abroad with her family every four years or so. My grandfather and I never spoke the same language, but that didn’t mean we couldn’t communicate.

One summer, I woke up most mornings to find some kind of contraband waiting for me: a soda, some candy or — my favorite, but very expensive in the old country — strawberry jam. Knowing my mother would never approve of the first two for breakfast, and knowing that she hadn’t been to the store yet for the third, I had my suspicions. I would carry the item of the day to my grandfather and show it to him — discretely, of course. He’d always wink, or smile sheepishly, and then walk off in his old man way.

Love you, Grandpa Leon. I’ll see you later, and we’ll talk.

The Freaks I Meet

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 10:42 pm

(I’ve thought about writing a book with the above title, but I haven’t gotten to that yet, so here’s a blog post in the meantime.)

Has everyone heard about the crazy man attacking women in N. Arlington using plastic bags?  Well, many of us are watching over our shoulders these days as we walk home from work, the store, school, etc.

I had class tonight, so I was very much on the alert coming home.  It was tiring.  Eventually, I realized that there are weirdos everywhere if you really take time to look.  But I don’t think that is just the case here.

What is the weirdest thing you’ve seen lately?

Splish Splash, Part Two

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 7:36 am

Just wanted to mention that, so far, no one has taken me up on my offer to experience his or her pool/air conditioning.  Perhaps that is because people are shy, afraid that I’ll judge their warm-weather treasures.  I won’t, I will just love them!  Let me know.

It’s a Small World After All…

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 7:33 am

Greetings from Walt Disney World!  Ok, actually in fact, I just got home from Orlando, and I should have written a little something from my hotel earlier this week.   But I did think of you while I was there — really!

I went to The Happiest Place on Earth for work, and I found it to be very happy indeed.  Here are some of my favorite moments:

  • Sitting next to four kids under the age of six on the plane ride down.  I’m not kidding!  They were polite, they were funny, and they were really, really cute.
  • Watching a rep from Disney tell a little girl and her family that they didn’t have to take the bus to their hotel from the airport.  Apparently, Cinderella placed a call and told the rep to arrange for a white car.  When he told the family to look outside, they saw a ginormous limosine.
  • Sitting by the pool and being joined by a rabbit, and squirrel, and some tiny little lizards.  It was very circle of life and hakuna matata!
  • Working with the Disney Institute, then having access to the Animal Kingdom after the park closed.
  • Not being embraced by a single costumed character.
  • Shopping at a vast open-air shopping village, where you can buy anything Disney.  One store had a room dedicated to Mr. Potato Head, Mrs. Potato Head, and all of their accoutrements.  So cool!

So, all in all, an excellent trip!  Of course, it was eventually time to pack up my ears and head back home.  But here’s to next time!

What is your best Disney memory?

A good time was had by all!  Here is an “after” picture, minus a few of our usual suspects:
