You, Too, Might Think (Olympic Version)…

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 11:10 pm

Watching the Olympics, I have found:

  • It feels good to be so happy for or inspired by people I’ve never met;
  • Beach volleyball is b-o-r-i-n-g, and men’s gymnastics can’t hold a candle to men’s swimming (yes, please!);
  • World records were made to be shattered;
  • High diving looks terrifying from any given angle;
  • Scrunchies are out. It is 2008; and
  • The tiny Chinese girls (who are most likely 10 years old) deserve to win so they can be let out of their cages for an extra 15 minutes per day. Save the Chinese girls!

What’s your favorite Olympic moment so far?

I Am Justified in My Fear

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 8:08 am

This is yet another reason why clowns freak me out. And I want to see the new Batman movie, but I’m scared. What if this guy ended up sitting next to me?!

How do you overcome your fears?

Confessions of a Professional Procrastinator

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 11:41 am

So I have a paper due tomorrow. You might think, that stinks — it’s summer! Who wants to stay in and write when you could go out and play? I would argue one is not exclusive of the other.

In fact, on these occasions, I’ve found it useful to procrastinate. One can accomplish a variety of mini-tasks, errands and relaxion projects when one really puts one’s mind to it.

Here is a smattering of what I enjoy during procrastination attempts:

  • Literature. It’s summer and there’s plenty of beach trash out there. I’ve already finished Chasing Harry Winston and How to Talk to a Widower. I recommend both. Actually, I especially recommend the latter as Jonathan Tropper is a gem. Someone called his books chick lit for men. I call them an education.
  • Cinema. I am currently watching About Last Night (who doesn’t love a young Demi Moore or Rob Lowe?), and I’ll probably watch another 80s movie by the end of the day.
  • Family Bonding. As you might recall, Kent and Lisa are getting married. Yesterday, Midgie and I joined Lisa and her mom to help pick out invitations. We had a really good time and love that Lisa is no Bridezilla.
  • Home Improvement. My apartment is never cleaner than when I have shit due. Fact.
  • Fitness. Did you know you can walk from my place to Georgetown and back in less than three hours? This takes longer if you stop to buy things, eat things or look at things.

Hope you are having a great weekend! What keeps you busy these days?

It’s Odd. Try It.

Has anyone tried tart frozen yogurt yet? I’m not going to lie: it’s weird. I liked it, though. Advice: don’t have a Mr. Medium right before you go dancing with friends. Ouchie.

What have you discovered lately?

Lesson Learned

I think some things should be left to professionals.

I’m Back!

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 2:18 pm

It has been pointed out that I am back, but forgot to share that news.

I’m back!

The trip was wonderful, and my bags are still packed. Maybe I’m planning to take off again, or maybe I’m in denial that I’m not on vacation anymore. Either way, three great weeks in Italy filled with:

  • culinary delights (seriously. Go there. Eat. Pasta is just the beginning.);
  • new friends;
  • new shoes (and perhaps a teeny, tiny Prada bag);
  • historical wonders and architectural marvels;
  • miles and miles (or kilometers and kilometers) walked; and
  • lots of new learnin.’

Oh, I should probably mention I ran out of time to send my postcards, so I’ll send them sometime soon from Arlington. Despite the U.S. stamp, I promise, I was there.

Life Is About Choices

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 2:56 pm

When in Italy, one must make choices. Sure, choices about food and wine and which ruin to visit next. But mostly, choices about what to buy.

Shoes! Bags! Dresses! Jewelry! Art! So far, I’ve been relatively restrained. But now that I’ve gotten to know my temporary home town better, I am ready to support the local economy.

I’ve currently got my eye on no fewer than three pairs of shoes and five dresses. Soon, I will be like Carrie Bradshaw, who almost had to live in her shoes.

What are you up to? Miss you all!

I Have Arrived

Filed under: Uncategorized — by accidentalluddite @ 5:00 pm

I’m here, and it is fabulous. I have met the most interesting people (historians, fashion designers, etc.) and they are so kind and sophisticated and amazing.

It goes without saying that the food and wine are unbelievable. And, I took so many photos on the first day that I ran out of camera battery power. The pictures are surprisingly good and I can’t wait to share them with you.

In fact, the first weekend included all of the following and more:

  • culinary delights;
  • five-star luxury;
  • armed escorts (NOT kidding);
  • historical treasures;
  • holy moly, the Vatican; and
  • buns of steel.
I am learning that I only want to be responsible for myself here; it is challenging to organize others since none of us speak Italian or know the rail system. But, the Italians are sweet and help us as they can. Unfortunately for them, I’ve mastered maybe twenty words in Italian and use them enthusiastically. Sometimes, I count to ten while I walk down the street.
Yes, I am that girl.
More soon. Ciao for now! (I told you: I am that girl.)
